Most of the Presbyterian colleges in Texas offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs and are rather large in size (more than 1,000 undergraduate students). Here we discuss a few of these distinguishing characteristics for the Presbyterian colleges in the state.
Austin College
As of 2021, Austin College had 1,212 undergraduate students and offers bachelor's and master's degree programs. Most of the master's degree programs are in education, but students may pursue bachelor's degrees in areas like computer science, foreign language, math, history, religious studies, biology, communications, business, psychology, chemistry, political science and the arts. Each student at Austin College has a faculty mentor and in 2021, 98% of graduates finished their degree in 4 years. Also, for the 2020-2021 school year, 100% of students received some form of financial aid to help pay for their schooling. To further develop their spiritual lives, students may participate in Bible studies, worship sessions, volunteer opportunities and spiritual organizations, like Young Life or Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). The school also has a unique labyrinth that students or faculty can walk to calm and quiet themselves as they meditate.
Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary is a unique graduate school offering master's and doctoral degree programs. In 2018, the school had 151 students pursuing degrees in areas like divinity/ministry, theology and theological and ministerial studies. The school was designated as one of the Seminaries that Change the World and is also a part of the Green Seminary Initiative for environmental initiatives. Despite being a smaller institution, students still have several organizations to participate in, including the African American Student Group, Philosophy Club, APTS Holy Spirit Squad and Polity Bowl and S.O.S. (Supporters of Seminarians). The school also offers multiple chapel services each week, including several different student-led services.
Schreiner University
In 2021, 100% of Schreiner University's incoming freshmen had some form of financial aid and with the Concierge Books program, students can begin college with no-cost course materials. The school has a rich Campus Ministry with organizations like FCA, non-denominational Bible studies, Habitudes Emerging Leaders Program and UKirk Worship. Students may also join a unique, spiritual learning community, called the Exodus Project, where students participate in retreats, discipleship, academics and service together. Schreiner University offers associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs, as well as certificate programs, and as of 2021 had 1,017 undergraduate students. The school has more than 42 academic programs, with master's degree programs primarily in business and education and undergraduate degree programs spanning areas such as speech, kinesiology and exercise science, design and visual communications, nursing, biology, psychology and accounting.
Trinity University
Trinity University had a total student enrollment of 2,527 in 2021 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 9 to 1. The school provides 47 different majors, including neuroscience, mass communication, engineering science, religious studies, anthropology, drama, economics and more. The school also offers master's degree programs in school psychology, hospital and health care facilities administration, accounting and education. Students on campus have more than 97 organizations and clubs to participate in and 58% of the student body plays intramural sports. For students' spiritual lives they may choose to participate in FCA, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship or other faith fellowships, like the Catholic Student Group or Hindu Student Union.
