Only a couple of schools offer human resources (HR) management programs in the Tampa, FL, region. This article looks at two schools that are no more than a 40-minute drive from downtown and at the HR management programs they offer. Though only one of these schools offers a certificate program, both provide the training and education necessary to get a job in the field.   • The University of South Florida's Tampa and St. Petersburg campuses offer professional and senior certificate courses in human resources management. The Tampa campus is about 11 miles from downtown, while the St. Petersburg campus is around 23 miles from the city center.
  • Saint Leo University, approximately 28 miles north of Tampa, doesn't have certificate programs, but does offer bachelor's and master's degree options in human resources management and administration. Saint Leo University's undergraduate program is available as a traditional on-campus program or can be completed online.

University of South Florida

With campuses in Tampa and St. Petersburg, the University of South Florida offers over 180 academic programs. A certificate program in human resources management offered by the continuing education division prepares students for HR certification offered through the HR Certification Institute.

Human Resources Management Certificate

The human resources manager certificate program offers two years of comprehensive instruction in the responsibilities of an HR manager. The 10-course program includes instruction in performance appraisal systems, employee relations, compensation and administration, recruitment, selection and placement. Students can register for each course individually. The program qualifies students to take the Professional in Human Resources certification test and complies with recertification continuing education requirements.

Professional/Senior Professional in Human Resources Course

Professionals interested in earning HR certification can take this course in advanced human resources management. Topics include ethical practice, relationship management, critical evaluation, communication and leadership. Completion of the program qualifies students to test for the Senior Professional in Human Resources certification. Students can choose from a 14-week program or three-week intensive sessions offered on Saturdays.

Saint Leo University

Since its inception in 1889, Saint Leo University has adapted to student needs by establishing daytime, evening and weekend programs, as well as distance learning opportunities. Students enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in human resources management are encouraged to become certified as professionals in human resources through the HR Certification Institute.

Bachelor of Arts in Human Resources Management

All business students must take foundational business courses, including accounting, marketing and economics. Additionally, students in this 120-credit program also learn the role and skills of human resources managers, such as hiring and termination policies, company responsibilities, occupational safety, organizational psychology and compensation. Students participate in an internship to develop skills and learn from professionals in the field. This program can be completed online or by attending campus-based classroom instruction.

Master of Business Administration with Specialization in Human Resources Management

The 36-credit online graduate program offers a specialization in human resources management. Courses teach management, accounting and administrative skills as they apply to employee relations. Students learn about proper training applications and the legal rights and responsibilities of corporations.
