Associate's Degree in Business Management

An online business management associate's degree program prepares graduates to perform leadership and analytical tasks at a variety of businesses. Students learn everything from proposing, planning and implementing improvements to assessing marketing needs and developing appropriate and successful business strategies. Many management courses overlap in areas of finance and accounting, which are separate degrees that could be pursued.

A student must obtain a high school diploma or GED certificate before applying to most associate's degree programs. Basic skills assessments may also be required by the school.

Program Information

It is possible to earn an online Associate of Business Management in 16 months, but it could take longer depending on how many courses are taken each term. Students work on assignments when they have the time and take exams when finished with each course. Having a computer, high-speed Internet and Microsoft Office software is necessary to access the online platform and complete class assignments. Many schools offer students instructor guidance through e-mail and phone conversations.

Common Coursework

Online business management associate's degree programs usually require the completion of general education coursework, including literacy, English composition and mathematics. Students may also be required to take basic business courses in economics, technical writing, marketing and accounting. Management curriculum will provide students with a basic understanding of leadership in the workplace and what roles a manager plays in the implementation of business strategies and processes.

Management Fundamentals

In this introductory course, students study the principles of management, including controlling, organizing, planning and leading. The application of these principles in creating successful outcomes in business and personal scenarios is discussed.

Organizational Behavior

Coursework covers an analysis of communication methods, management theories, institutional structure and the effects of change. Students learn how to make effective decisions and deal with conflicts that may arise in business environments.

Business Law

Students are introduced to the laws and regulations that effect business activities. Topics of ethics and the social responsibility of organizations are explored, in addition to a basic outline of the U.S. legal system.

Career Information for Graduates

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), projects a two percent decrease in job opportunities for supervisors of retail sales workers during the 2018-2028 decade. In May 2018, the BLS reported that first-line supervisors of retail sales workers in the U.S. earned a median annual wage of $39,630. Management skills are necessary to perform the functions of a sales staff supervisor, so prior experience in addition to an associate's degree is usually required.

Continuing Education Information

Most associate's degree programs are designed to transition into a bachelor's degree program. Some Bachelor of Business Administration programs provide concentrations or majors in management, and many institutions give students the option of earning the degree completely online.

Online associate's programs in business management can prepare students with prior work experience for entry-level supervisory roles. Graduates may also pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration, which is often available online.
