Human Resources Certificate and Certification Programs

Essential Information

Human resources managers hire and train employees and handle employee affairs within a company of any size. Certification in human resources provides specialists an opportunity to display competency in various subjects within the human resources profession. These programs may benefit both individuals seeking a career in human resources and independent business owners.

Prior experience in human resources and a bachelor's degree might be required. Programs last from 12 weeks to 18 months.

Human Resources Certificate Programs

The curriculum of a human resources certificate program educates students on topics such as payroll, employee performance, training and the government regulations regarding employee relations. These programs prepare individuals for certification in human resources. Common courses include:

  • Employee development and performance management
  • Compensation
  • Employment law/labor legislation
  • Organization management/Organizational risk
  • Human behavior
  • Human resources strategies

Employment Outlook & Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that human resources (HR) manager jobs might see a 7% growth rate between 2018 and 2028, which is faster than the average of other occupations. Changes to areas such as equal employment opportunity, healthcare and retirement plans have a lot to do with the increased demand for HR professionals. The reported median annual salary for human resources managers was $116,720, as of May 2019.

Continuing Education

Individuals with HR experience may seek professional credentials to demonstrate their competency in this field. Several HR industry organizations offer certification examinations. For example, the Human Resources Certification Institute offers the Professional in Human Resources, Senior Professional in Human Resources and the Global Professional in Human Resources certifications for individuals who meet eligibility requirements and pass the exams.

Applicants must have the required amount of experience paired with either a master's or bachelor's degree, or enough experience without a degree. These certification exams test expertise in areas such as employee relations, compensation and benefits, and strategic business management.

Human resources certification is available through programs that focus on things like compensation, human behavior, and labor law. Exams are also available for additional certifications.
