A career in international commercial law, also known as international trade or international business law, can give you the opportunity to earn a good living while traveling the world. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for lawyers in this field in 2019 was $122,960.
There are two branches to this field. The first in the private sector, working for companies that have operations in multiple countries or engage in international commerce. The second involves writing the treaties and rules that govern trade between different nations. Most lawyers in this branch work for government agencies or for international groups like the World Trade Organization.
Both branches deal with the legal aspects of customs procedure and enforcement, real estate, intellectual property rights, taxes and tariffs, investment and finance, and other issues related to the production and transfer of goods and services from one country to another. You should consider adding a specialization in one of these areas to go with your law degree. It would also help to focus on a particular country, such as Germany or India, developing a knowledge base in that country's laws and culture and becoming proficient in their language.
