Can a registered nurse do an arterial line?
Question:
Can a registered nurse do an arterial line?
Perfect School Search
Answer:
Arterial line procedure is done to measure the blood pressure of a patient constantly. This is done to patients who have injury or those who have unstable blood pressure. Arterial line is also used for patients whose blood sampling must be done frequently. Usually, doctors and surgeons perform this procedure but registered nurses are also allowed to do arterial line. There must be a special training registered nurses must take to avoid any malpractice during the procedure. Most of the time, registered ICU nurses receive this kind of training as needed appropriately in their station. The arterial line procedure that registered nurses can perform, though, is limited. Arterial line in radial arteries can be performed by RN but femoral is performed by physicians-in-charge. While this is an acceptable practice, only few hospitals allow arterial line insertion by RN because the procedure has too many risks.
