About the University of Florida

The University of Florida (UF) is a 4-year, research university located about two minutes from downtown Gainesville, Florida. With a 2,000-acre campus made up of over 900 buildings, UF is one of the biggest universities in the United States and is the oldest university in the state of Florida. UF is a member of the Association of American Universities and was ranked second by Kiplinger in a 2012 list of public colleges with the best value.

Academics

UF offers undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs. The university has sixteen colleges: the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Public Health and Health Professions, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, the College of Medicine, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Levin College of Law, the College of Journalism and Communications, the College of Health and Human Performance, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Engineering, the College of Education, the College of Design, Construction and Planning, the College of Dentistry, the Warrington College of Business Administration and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. UF offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through its online learning programs.

The campus has over 150 research centers and institutes, and the school's information resource system is the largest in the state. UF offers an honors program with opportunities to study abroad, intern and participate in research. UF's faculty members have received Pulitzer Prizes, a Fields Medal and awards from NASA and the Smithsonian Institution.

Admissions

UF only accepts online applications. The due date for freshmen applicants is November 1st. Freshmen applicants must submit essays, resumes, ACT or SAT scores and official high school transcripts. The fine art programs have additional requirements. Admissions requirements and due dates for graduate programs vary depending on department.

Applicants are able to check their application statuses within two to four weeks of submission. Admissions decisions can also be viewed online, and only students who are admitted receive written notification. Admissions decisions are made by the middle of February.

In 2012, 81.2% of freshmen admitted to UF had GPAs of 4.0 and above. During this same time period, 93% of undergraduate students attended the university full-time, while 74% of graduate students attended full-time. The majority of undergraduate students were under the age of 24 and living in-state. UF accepts dual credit and AP credits.

Tuition & Financial Aid

The average cost of attendance for undergraduate students in 2012-2013 was $20,580 per year for students living on or off campus and $12,270 for students living at home. These estimates include tuition, supplies and all other living expenses.

UF offers merit-based scholarships. Financial need is considered for some of these scholarships. The majority of UF students do not have student debt when they graduate.
