What is a strong GRE score for a PhD program in education?

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is part of the admissions process for many PhD programs in education. Each university and program will have differing GRE requirements in their application process. Some schools also choose to not specify a minimum GRE score required or disclose average applicant scores in order to not discourage potential applicants from applying. The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania is an example of a school that has chosen to disclose GRE average scores. The average GRE scores of PhD students enrolled in Fall 2020 was 161 for the verbal section, 156 for the quantitative section, and 4.9 for the writing section. Although this is an average and some students scored higher and lower, it can be deduced that a score close to the class average would make for a strong applicant score. As each program and school differs, it is important for applicants to research programs of interest or contact the admissions office to learn what GRE scores the specific program of interest would consider strong.
