Medical assistants certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) must renew their medical assistant certification every five years through examination or continuing education requirements. For certifications that have lapsed or expired within 90 days of their expiration date may choose between the certification exam or completing the required continuing education. However, if the certification expired over 90 days since the expiration date, medical assistants must sit for the AAMA medical assistant certification exam.

For medical assistants who have not let their certification lapse for more than 90 days, medical assistants can participate in a number of continuing education activities, available for both AAMA members and non-members. Continuing education credits must cover a specific set of topics:

  • 10 points in administrative areas
  • 10 points in clinical areas
  • 10 points in general areas
  • 30 points from any combination of the above three categories

Medical assistants can review the recertification website for ways to earn continuing education points both in-person and through online formats.
