Answer:

In order to take the NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) personal trainer certification (CPT) exam, both CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) certifications must be current. While NASM does not have a stated preference for which organization the CPR and AED certifications should be from, they do recommend checking with a local Red Cross for courses. The two most widely recognized organizations that provide CPR and AED training and certifications are the American Red Cross, and the American Heart Association. Both organizations have options for in-person training as well as blended training that combines an online course with an in-person skills session.

In addition to meeting the eligibility requirement of CPR/AED certification, one must also be over the age of 18, and have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to take the CPT exam. NASM offers several options to help prepare for the CPT exam that range from flexible self-guided study and materials, to personal coaching and mentoring.
