Is customer service a good career?

Question:

Is customer service a good career?

Perfect School Search

Answer:

Unfortunately, a career in customer service may not be ideal for individuals seeking job security, potentially high earnings, and job growth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (as of 2019), the job market for customer service representatives is expected to decrease by 2% within a ten-year period (2018-2028). In addition to the downward trajectory, the median pay rate for customer service workers is $34,710 per year, which is considerably less than the median household income for 2018 ($61,937, according to the United States Census Bureau). Although a long-term career as a customer service representative may not be ideal for most people, individuals who have limited educational and work experience (e.g., recent high school graduates) often earn invaluable work experience and skills by starting out in customer service positions (which often require little to no formal education or training for associate-level roles). In general, employers seek individuals with the following characteristics and qualifications for customer service positions:

  • the applicant should either be in high school, have a high school diploma, or equivalent
  • the applicant should enjoy working with people
  • the applicant should be able to handle stressful situations with poise and grace
