Job Description

Graphic artists combine art and technology to create designs and logos for magazines, advertising, clothing, book covers, album covers, and social media.

As artists, many graphic designers use traditional forms, such as painting or sketching, to create their original designs.

Graphic artists then use computers and image editing software to turn the original design into a digital graphic that can be used across different forms of media.

Some graphic artists work for design firms, while others own their own businesses. As business owners, they have other responsibilities, including bringing in new clients.

Staying up-to-date on the latest trends and design software is crucial to staying competitive in this dynamic industry.

Job Duties

A graphic artist begins work by meeting with clients or supervisors to discuss the design project and the client's needs.

They might also incorporate data from a research department or follow budgetary guidelines to determine the scope of the project.

After determining what the client is looking for, graphic artists create a rough draft of the concept, either by hand or on the computer.

Then, they present the concept to the client. The client might suggest changes or approve the design.

This process is typically completed under tight deadlines, which can result in long work hours and intense brainstorming sessions.

Salary

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a median annual wage of $50,710 for graphic designers as of May 2021.

California and New York have the highest employment levels for graphic designers. As of May 2021, the mean average salaries there are $70,090 and $74,510, respectively.

Career Outlook

The BLS projects the employment of graphic designers to grow by 3% from 2021 to 2031. This growth rate is slower than the average for all occupations.

A continued decrease in print newspapers and magazines tends to limit growth in this field. At the same time, companies continue to increase their digital presence.

Graphic artists who are particularly skilled in web design and digital graphics likely have a competitive edge. Familiarity with the latest software is a plus.
