The American Welding Society (AWS) offers nine specialized certifications. These certifications can improve career opportunities and increase pay and advancement within a company. A Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) certification validates the individual's knowledge in welding including codes, assembly standards, and specifications.
A CWEng certification requires the completion of 4 exams. Each exam consists of a number of multiple choice questions, between 25-45 questions. The exams cover a wide array of knowledge from chemistry and mathematics, to quality control and safety. The exams are meant to cover an extensive amount of knowledge to affirm the quality of the individual certified. The cost of the exams are between $450 -$538 per set: exams 1 &2 are taken together, exams 3 &4 are taken together. The certifications last for five years and need to be renewed to stay current. Renewal of these certifications require continued training within that time period following guidelines stated for the certificate.
