Answer:
In Hawaii, a commercial driver's license (CDL) lasts between 1 and 8 years. Drivers over 72 are limited to 1 or 2-year renewals, while drivers aged 20-24 can get a maximum of 4 years. Only drivers between 25 and 71 can get 8-year CDLs, though if you're endorsed to transport hazardous waste, you have to renew every five years regardless.
You can renew your license up to 6 months before the expiration date. There is a 90-day grace period for expiration, at which point you'll be charged $5 for every 30 days the license isn't renewed. You have a year to renew your CDL, or you'll have to apply for a new one.
While you can find forms online, please note that renewal of a CDL must be done in person at your local Motor Vehicle Safety office. Call ahead, and bring all documents with you.
You will need:
- Proof of passing a recent vision exam (minimum 20/40)
- Unexpired Hawaii Department of Transportation (DOT) physical card
- Proof of social security number and Hawaiian residency
- CDL application
- Method of payment
If you transport hazardous waste, you also need:
- Proof of citizenship
- Fingerprints
- Background check
- Clearance from Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
- Completed written knowledge test
