The minimum requirements for the American Petroleum Institute (API) 510 Standard Pressure Vessel inspector certification is a combination of education and experience that is related to pressure vessels. This experience has to have been required within the last ten years while employed or under contract with an authorized inspection agency. A bachelor's or higher in engineering or technology and one year of experience are one of the minimum requirements for application. Another minimum requirement is an associate's degree or certificate in engineering or technology with two years of work experience. The fourth minimum requirement for application is a high school diploma or equivalent with three years of work experience. The fifth minimum requirement for application is no education with five years of work experience. There is studying that needs to be done for the exam. The exam itself is a 7 and a half hour day. There are 170 questions on the exam with 140 of them scorable. The API 510 certification must be applied for every three years.
