The American Society for Clinical Pathology's Board of Certification offers several routes to get the medical laboratory technician (MLT) certification. The first route to certification is an associate's degree or 60 hours of academic credit from a college or university that is accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency, along with the successful completion of a NAACLS or ABHES accredited MLT program within five years of application. The second route is a valid CLA (ASCP) certification and an associate's degree or 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university that involved 6 semester hours in both chemistry and biology. The third route is an associate's degree or 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university with six semester hours in both chemistry and biology, alongside successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course. The fourth route is an associate's degree or 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university with six semester hours in both chemistry and biology, along with three years of full-time clinical experience in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and body fluids completed in an accredited lab within six years of application.
