A physician assistant can absolutely be a medical director with additional education. Medical directors are required to have a medical degree with a board certification in emergency care, occupational health, or family care. Employers will also look for potential directors that have several years of medical management experience, such as administrative and clerical. Most medical managers typically work in an office to coordinate, plan, and direct health facilities, so as you move up to medical director, these skills are important.

As a physician assistant, you would have already received your bachelor's and a master's degree. Physician assistants are also required to be licensed (per state requirement). To be licensed you must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). With the skills already acquired as a physician assistant, you will be steps ahead in terms of experience in the field. So if you are willing to get more education and experience you could become a medical director.
