Answer:

A quick review of current positions advertised on Indeed for durable medical equipment (DME) providers highlights four to five general roles necessary to run a DME business.

These positions include:

  • A durable medical equipment sales position, who has knowledge of the equipment
  • A patient care coordinator/hospital liaison who can help patients transition home or to another setting with their equipment
  • A technician to assemble, prepare, and repair equipment
  • A billing specialist who has a strong understanding of Medicare and Medicaid, HMOs and PPOs, and
  • A delivery technician who transports and sets up equipment.

None of these positions require a registered nurse license or an assistive technology professional certificate. In general, these positions require a high school education but expressed a preference for higher education or certification for the patient care coordinator and billing specialist positions. However, nearly all positions required some knowledge of Medicaid and Medicare. Before you consider a DME position, make sure you review your state requirements for working with DME, as these may be different from what our research here. (Positions reviewed on Indeed included those from the following states: SC, MS, GA, PA, TX, CA, MT, and WA.)
