To become a successful fraud investigator, two of the most important skills to have are reading and listening. Whether they are reading a work-related documents or listening to verbal descriptions of financial transactions, fraud investigators need to have an ability to listen to what others are saying and figure out what information is necessary to record or remember. They also need to be extremely aware of others' reactions, but able to work well on a team. Critical thinking is also a skill that many investigators find useful on the job, as they sort through difficult pieces of information.

Some areas of expertise that fraud investigators find helpful include a knowledge of economics and accounting. Obviously, if they are to be able to discover fraudulent activity, they must understand accounting principles and practices, in addition to financial markets and banking. Moreover, they need to understand the analysis and reporting process of financial data, so that they can find potential discrepancies.
