Answer:

The standards for high and low GPAs vary by law school, but in general, A low GPA for law schools would be a GPA below 3.00. According to US News and World Report, among the 193 ranked US law schools that reported the median GPAs of their incoming fall 2017 applicants, the average median GPAs at each school were the following based on school rank:

  • Top 10 law schools: 3.86 GPA.
  • Middle 173 law schools: 3.40 GPA.
  • Bottom 10 law schools: 2.95 GPA.

Based on this information, 50% of applicants to the bottom 10 law schools had GPAs below 2.95 on average, and 50% of applicants had GPAs of at least 2.95 on average. In this sense, the GPAs of the bottom 50% of applicants to the bottom 10 law schools represent low GPAs for law school. Furthermore, since these schools rank the lowest among 193, even the GPAs of some among the top 50% of applicants would represent low GPAs for law school. Most law schools, especially the top 10, will not typically accept applicants with GPAs as low as those accepted by the bottom 10 schools. Some will accept applicants with GPAs below 3.00, however, if the applicants can strengthen their applications in other areas.
