What is a program manager in construction?

A construction program manager is a supervisor who is knowledgeable in the many disciplines of construction and project management, such as engineering, building sciences, and architecture. A Construction program manager must be able to collaborate with many different contractors and outside vendors to complete an assigned construction project. Most construction program managers have a bachelor's in arts or bachelor's in science in engineering, architecture, building sciences or a similar field. Experience supervising mechanics, laborers, and building experts is a plus in this field. A project manager professional (PMP) certification would be an excellent asset in this career. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), construction program managers make a median salary of $95,260 per year as of 2019. The BLS found in 2019 that the job growth rate for this position was at 8%, which is faster than other jobs. The BLS predicts demand for qualified construction program managers is expected to continue to increase over the next decade (2020-2030). Construction program managers typically work more than 40 hours per week and are on call 24 hours a day until the construction project is complete.
