As a forensic scientist you would be responsible for the collection, cataloguing, and analysis of evidence and other vital materials with regard to a criminal investigation. In Louisiana there are three main colleges that provide forensic science bachelors degrees. They are: Louisiana Delta Community College, Southern University at New Orleans, and Loyola University New Orleans. It is necessary to achieve a bachelors degree in order to become a forensic scientist. Beyond classes specifically dealing with forensic science, it is encouraged to seek further education in the areas of biology and chemistry. The profession itself is a growing one. Between the years 2019 and 2029, there is an expected 14% growth in employment according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is much higher than average. While there is generally no prior experience necessary when being hired, a forensic scientist will constantly be learning through on the job experience and training.
