Is the Sacred Heart University speech-language pathology program accredited?

The Sacred Heart University offers a Master of Science degree program in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) that has been granted accreditation by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education. Along with this, the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language (CAA-SLP) of the ASHA, or American Speech, Language and Hearing Association, accredits the programs.

The university also offers Accelerated BS/MS in SLP, and in that, one can choose Communication Disorders (CMD) as their major for a 4-year undergraduate degree program. This program is also accredited by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education and CAA-SLP of ASHA.

The accreditation measures all aspects of the program and ensures that the students of the program meet all the requirements for certification nationally and also state licensure as SL Pathologists. The university's teacher endorsement program has also been recognized and approved by the Connecticut State Department of Education to make graduates eligible for serving in Connecticut public schools as SLPs.

The MS degree in SLP at SHU can be completed in two ways, in either two or three years. For a two-year program, students are required to complete prerequisite coursework and hours in Communication Disorders (CMD). This program has 5 semesters over 2 calendar years, and students must complete graduate-level coursework and a supervised clinical practicum of 375 hours. The three-year program is for students without coursework in CMD. This program involves a pre-clinical year to complete all the required courses and clinical observations of 25 hours. After completing the pre-clinical year with a GPA of 3.3 or more, students get to the first clinical year of the two-year track program.
