Speech pathologists, commonly known as speech therapists, are required to get at least a master's degree to practice this occupation. Therefore, it takes around 6 years to become a speech therapist. First, apprentices need to get a bachelor's degree, which can be in almost any field as long as they take relevant courses for a career in speech pathology. Majoring in communication science and disorders is a good option to become a speech therapist. After getting their bachelor's degree, apprentices will be able to apply for a master's program in speech pathology. In the U.S., these programs are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA), part of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Master's programs in speech pathology include both classroom classes and supervised clinical experience. Once they earn their master's degree, speech pathologists will have to get a license in their state. This involves completing a specific amount of clinical experience and passing an examination.
