Answer:
According to the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM), there are five pathways to sit for the Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) examination. Regardless of chosen path, all candidates must have a high school diploma and current Basic Life Support certification. Pathway A is the completion of an accredited polysomnography program. Depending on the chosen school, this program may be typically completed in as little as 8 months. Pathway B requires the completion of an 80-hour program and online modules. This path also requires hands-on experience performing 50 overnight sleep studies. Pathway C is generally intended for current healthcare professionals. Pathway D allows currently registered polysomnographic technologist to sit for the exam at any time. Pathway E allows credit for candidates that work in an accredited sleep facility to use their hands-on experience performing 50 sleep studies and completion of online modules as qualification to sit for the exam. Training may take between 3 to 18 months.
After meeting certain prerequisites, candidates must apply to sit for the RST examination, pay the test fee, and study for the exam. It is highly recommended that each candidate verifies requirements for the state in which they want to work. Certification and licensing requirements may vary.
