Each state has different sets of requirements for home health aides. In Ohio, there is no certification provided by the state nor specific requirements mandated for home health aides in the area. Most training is done on the job. However, employers would prefer home health aides who have a background or relevant experience before hiring. It is also up to your employer as to which training you must undergo before entering the company. You can take voluntary certifications to make sure you meet the national standards for home health aides. Training for this certificate can be received from community colleges or healthcare training providers around Ohio. Agencies funded by Medicare or Medicaid in all states require the minimum federal training requirement which is 75 training hours including 16 clinical hours.
For some who want to become a Medicaid-certified independent home health aide, they can enroll through the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. They must pass a background check done by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. An FBI background check will be necessary if they have lived in Ohio for less than 5 years.
Generally speaking, there is no minimum educational requirement for home health aides in the United States. Of course, just like any other job, having a degree or good GED score will open doors for promotions and salary increases.
