Answer:

The Registry for Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) offers two certifications: the National Interpreter Certification, and the Certified Deaf Interpreter.

National Interpreter Certification (NIC) validates that the holder meets the professional interpretation and transliteration standards with general knowledge and skills. The NIC certification process starts with an NIC Knowledge Exam, for which candidates are eligible to take once they are at least 18 years of age. Once the educational requirement of at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent is met, the NIC candidate is eligible to apply to sit for the NIC Interview and take the NIC Performance Exam.

Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) credentials are for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and validates specialized expertise using communication tools as well as fluency in American Sign Language. CDI candidates start the certification process with a Generalist Knowledge Exam, for which eligibility requires 40 hours of RID approved training in addition to submission of an audiogram or letter from an audiologist. An associate's degree (bachelor's degree after May 17, 2021) or equivalent is then necessary to move on to the Generalist Performance Exam.

Candidates for both certifications will take all exams through Center for the Assessment of Sign Language Interpretation, LLC (CASLI), while all credentialing and eligibility determinations will be handled through RID.
