Navy ROTC Colleges in Maryland
The University of Maryland at College Park and Baltimore County, as well as George Washington University in nearby Washington D.C., offer Naval ROTC programs that prepare students for service with the Navy or Marine Corps. Although these programs vary slightly in some details, they all offer NROTC scholarships and courses intended to prepare students for active duty.
University of Maryland - College Park
The University of Maryland in College Park offers students a Naval ROTC program to prepare students for active duty in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Students in the program are required to participate in professional seminars and naval science courses each week, as well as a 4-week active-duty training cruise in the summer. Navy midshipmen must take 8 courses, while marines must take at least 6 courses. Courses include topics in leadership, ethics, naval science, warfare and more. The school does offer a NROTC scholarship program that prepares students for leadership and management positions.
University of Maryland - Baltimore County
The University of Maryland in Baltimore County also offers a NROTC program that prepares students for the required 5 years of active duty for Navy service members and 4 years of active duty for Marine Corps. Students in the program are encouraged to major in a technical major, but can major in anything they wish. They must take courses in Naval Science, which includes topics in leadership, naval history and more. The school offers competitive NROTC scholarships that cover the cost of tuition and fees, and provides $350 each semester for books, as well as a monthly stipend.
The George Washington University
The George Washington University offers a NROTC program that is also available to students from Catholic University, Georgetown University and Howard University. All midshipmen are required to take 4 core courses that cover topics in leadership, naval science, maritime affairs, ethics and more. Navy midshipmen must take 8 courses and can choose from additional classes in navigation, naval operations and naval ship systems, while marines must take at least 6 courses and choose from courses in the evolution of warfare and amphibious warfare. Choosing a major in a technical field increases a student's chance of receiving a NROTC scholarship that covers tuition, uniforms, naval science textbooks and offers a monthly stipend and text book stipend each semester. Their year in school and the scholarship awarded determines which summer training session the student will be required to complete each year.
