Overview of Michigan Colleges with Navy ROTC Programs
The three schools in Michigan that offer NROTC programs are all based out of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Therefore, program requirements are largely the same, but the schools vary slightly in the additional military benefits that they offer students. Compare the three programs below.
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor's NROTC program began in 1940. The program requires participating students, or midshipmen, to attend a weekly two-hour drill session, multiple physical training sessions and Naval Science coursework. Students also receive hands-on training through a summer training session called 'Cruise'. Graduates of the program typically serve eight years in the Navy, with at least 5 years of active duty. Midshipmen may also choose to be a part of additional student organizations, such as Endurance Team, Competition Color Guard, Drill Team and Intramural Sports. Students can apply for NROTC scholarships as high school students or apply for 2- or 3-year scholarships as in-college students to pay for tuition.
University of Michigan-Dearborn
The University of Michigan-Dearborn has a NROTC program that is coordinated through the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Students wishing to participate in the program must have at least two years left in their undergraduate studies. High school and in-college students can apply for full-tuition scholarships that also provide a monthly stipend and book allowance. Although it is not part of the NROTC program, the school also offers a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship for sophomores, juniors or seniors. This program does not require drills, summer trips or additional coursework, but allows students to earn their commission through Officer Candidate School (OCS) if they maintain their GPA. The program teaches students leadership and management skills and offers extra incentives for students who make the Dean's List.
Eastern Michigan University
Students at Eastern Michigan University can participate in NROTC through the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Midshipmen complete their NROTC requirements, NROTC coursework, physical training and drills on campus at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. College students can apply for the 2- or 3-year scholarships if they have between 30 and 90 semester hours, a 2.5 or higher GPA and are admitted to a school with a NROTC program. The application process is extensive and includes an application letter, statement of understanding, drug statement and more. Those who earn a scholarship receive full-tuition, a monthly stipend that varies in amount based on the applicant's year in school and a stipend for textbooks.
