Courses for prospective jailers are generally found in undergraduate certificate and degree programs in criminal justice or corrections. These programs provide individuals with entry-level education in the various duties of the profession. Some institutions may also offer graduate-level certificate and degree programs in the field; however, these programs are typically geared towards those wishing to advance their present careers and/or acquire administrative positions.

Correctional Systems Course
This course examines the function, structure, and practice of correctional, probation and parole systems. Participants discuss the criminal justice system, the theory and history of correctional institutions and the types of incarceration facilities used today. Programs to assist inmates in institutionalization adjustment, treatment, and rehabilitation are reviewed. This course also examines the role of probation and parole officers.
Jail Operations Course
Individuals learn the day-to-day operations of a correctional facility, including the booking, classification, fingerprinting and photographing of prisoners. This course examines the health, recreation, rights, and population control of an institution's inmates. Students review the safety practices covering correctional officers and inmates.
Discipline and Special Confinement Course
This course explores the methods used to discipline an inmate in a correctional facility. Students discuss the legal aspects of using disciplinary action, including special confinement measures to correct abnormal or unwanted behavior. This course examines the correctional officer's role in enforcing discipline.
Handling Emergency Situations Course
Students survey emergencies that may arise in a prison environment and how to address these situations. Lessons cover the creation of emergency plans for disturbances, fires, hostage negotiations, and riots. Students research the underlying causes of these disturbances, such as stress, panic, and emotional turmoil. Skills needed for crisis intervention are also covered.
Suicide Prevention Course
This course studies the causes of inmate suicide in prisons and jails. Individuals learn how to assess inmates who may have suicidal tendencies and to recognize suicidal behavior when it occurs. Prevention techniques are discussed, as well as related topics, such as jail design, suicide litigation, and leadership strategies.
Youth Offenders Course
Participants learn skills to manage and supervise youth offenders. This course looks at the causes of juvenile delinquency and the treatment programs available. Students learn communication skills that promote positive feedback. This course also looks at how the criminal justice system processes adolescent offenders.
