Students in Maine who wish to participate in AFROTC at the University of Southern Maine actually participate in a partnership program with the University of New Hampshire. Here we discuss the program offered at the University of New Hampshire and how students in Maine participate.
University of Southern Maine
The University of Southern Maine's partnership with the University of New Hampshire allows its students to participate in the AFROTC Detachment 475 at the University of New Hampshire. This small detachment (about 50 cadets) provides extensive hands-on training that is typically completed in four years, but can be a three-year program. The program consists of the General Military Course for the first two years, followed by summer field training and the Professional Officer Course the next two years. All four years students participate in Leadership Lab, physical training and AFROTC coursework with topics in the U.S. Air Force, national security, leadership and the evolution of the US Air Force and space power.
Students at the University of Southern Maine complete all of their AFROTC coursework on campus at the University of New Hampshire, but are full-time students at the University of Southern Maine, and, therefore, do not pay tuition to the University of New Hampshire. Students are eligible to compete for national AFROTC scholarships as high school seniors or earn a 2- or 3-year scholarship once they are in college. Scholarships typically cover tuition and most fees and provide a monthly stipend and book allowance.
