Overview of Delaware Colleges with Air Force ROTC Programs
Although there is only one unique AFROTC program in Delaware, there are several participating schools. Learn about some of the program's requirements and some of the different schools that participate in it.
University of Delaware
The University of Delaware offers participation in AFROTC Detachment 128 to its students and students from several surrounding institutions. Cadets in the program participate in early morning physical trainings, AFROTC coursework and Leadership Lab. The school offers a unique shadow program for students considering participation in the program where prospective students follow a current cadet to participate in the daily AFROTC activities. The program also offers an orientation program for new cadets. Students are free to participate in any number of extra activities offered through the university, such as intramural sports, movie nights, awards banquets and other social events. Students are eligible to compete for national AFROTC scholarships to help pay for school expenses.
Wilmington University
Wilmington University is one of the schools that offer participation in AFROTC Detachment 128 through the University of Delaware. Students are enrolled in Wilmington's ROTC program, but complete training and coursework on the University of Delaware's campus. The basic coursework that is completed in the first two years of the program require 2 to 3 hours a week. Cadets can complete the first two years of the program without committing to service in the Air Force. Students can apply for national AFROTC scholarships.
Delaware State University
Delaware State University is another school that allows students to participate in the University of Delaware's AFROTC program through a Cross-Enrollment Agreement. Students complete their AFROTC requirements of physical training, Leadership Lab and AFROTC coursework on the University of Delaware's campus. During cadets' sophomore year, Leadership Lab is geared toward preparing cadets for their summer Field Training experience. Field Training lasts 3 to 4 weeks and takes place on a U.S. Air Force Base to provide additional training and physical conditioning for cadets.
Delaware Technical Community College-Terry
Students at Delaware Technical Community College can also participate in the University of Delaware's AFROTC program. Like the other participating schools, students are enrolled at Delaware Technical Community College, but complete their AFROTC requirements at the University of Delaware. Cadets participate in physical training, Leadership Lab and AFROTC courses that cover topics in U.S. air and space power, military training and Field Training preparation. Students from the school, as well as students from the additional cross-enrollment schools or seniors in high school, who are interested in joining the program are eligible for the University of Delaware's shadow program to experience a day in the life of a cadet.
