Chromatography Courses and Classes Overview

Essential Information

Chromatography is a process by which mixtures are separated based on their absorbency levels. Students enrolled in chromatography classes learn processes to determine separation procedures. Coursework will include instruction in theory, application and hands-on practice of chromatography.

Here is a list of concepts commonly examined in chromatography courses:

  • Gas chromatography detectors
  • Microscale flash column chromatography
  • Separation of biomolecules
  • Gel permeation
  • Quantitative techniques

The following topics listed below may be offered as standalone courses, or may be included as part of a broader chemistry course.

List of Chromatography Courses

Introduction to Chromatography

Students are introduced to chromatography and its basic theory. The course surveys various types of chromatography methods, such as GC and CC. Other types of chromatography touched on include ion-exchange, gel permeation, thin-layer and paper chromatography, among others. The course goes on to look at detectors and various applications of chromatography.

Column Chromatography

Column chromatography (CC) is a type of chromatography used in the purification of liquids. Students learn the theory of CC and about the equipment used. In the lab, students perform various separations, using CC. They get experience in packing the column, using different adsorbents (alumina, gel or silica), adding the sample and trying different eluents with different samples.

Gas Chromatography

A course in gas chromatography (GC) consists of classroom instruction and labs. In class, students learn about the inner workings of a gas chromatography machine and the theory behind GC. In the lab, students learn how to use an actual gas chromatography machine. They practice setting-up the machine for various samples, injecting the sample into the machine and interpreting the resultant chromatograph.

GC and Mass Spectrometry (MS)

This course demonstrates the use of a MS as a detector for GC. The various components of a MS (ionization source, analyzer and detector) are studied. Lastly, the course covers understanding a mass spectrum.

Analytical Chromatography

This lecture and lab course examines chromatography as an analytical method. The various types of chromatography and the associate equipment are discussed while students conduct practical analyses during the lab portion of the course.

Selecting a Column for GC

This course looks at the actual instrumentation used to perform gas chromatography. Students examine various columns and their performance. Additional topics covered include how to select the supporting solid and the liquid phase.
