Program Description:

From behavioral theories to understanding the developmental processes relating to memory, intelligence, and reasoning, Grand Canyon University's Doctor of Philosophy in General Psychology - Cognition and Instruction (Quantitative Research) program offers students the opportunity to learn how cognition plays a role in instructional design and strategies. Required courses address cognitive psychology theories applicable in learning and instruction; educational research in such areas as memory and intelligence; social cognition concepts; and behavioral teaching methods. Students could also expect to discuss the history of psychotherapy; theories and philosophies of Humanistic, Transpersonal, and Existential psychology; principles of learning; and influences on the development of psychological thought and concepts. The extensive dissertation process in this program includes research design courses, two residencies used for hands-on research opportunities and oral defense of research, and a completion process guided by a dissertation committee.
