About the University of Wyoming

Founded in 1886, the University of Wyoming (UW) is a research institution located in Laramie, WY, and it's Wyoming's only 4-year university. It achieved recognition in the U.S. News & World Report's 2011 edition of Best Colleges by ranking 81st among public colleges and 153rd among national universities.

Notable highlights of the UW campus include the NCAR - Wyoming Supercomputing Center and the School of Energy Resources. The university supports sustainability efforts through a variety of initiatives, including waste recycling and energy reduction.

Academics

UW offers 80 undergraduate and 90 graduate degree programs in more than 200 fields of study. Its 7 academic colleges include the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Law, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Undergraduate students seeking a more challenging college experience can seek opportunities through the Honors Program. Seminars, study abroad and research projects are some of the things Honors students participate in. Additionally, Honors Program students can pre-register for classes before other students in order to guarantee they get the classes they want.

Through UW's Outreach School, students can enroll in distance-learning programs. Select bachelor's master's and doctoral programs are available as well as several certificate and endorsement programs.

Admissions

Students seeking admission into UW need to submit their official high school transcripts and SAT and/or ACT test scores along with a completed application and $40 fee to the admissions office. Students over the age of 21 that have a GED are not required to submit their ACT or SAT test scores. Once students have submitted their application and all required materials, they can check their admissions status online by creating a student account on the UW website.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and fees for resident undergraduate students were $4,278 for the 2012-2013 academic year; non-resident undergraduate students were charged $13,488. Remaining costs, regardless of residency, included room and board at about $9,084, books and supplies at about $1,200, travel expenses at around $890 and personal expenses at approximately $2,200. Graduate students have varying rates for tuition depending on their chosen degree program.

Students can apply for financial aid in the form of federal loans, grants, scholarships and federal work-study programs. Students seeking financial aid in any form must fill out a FAFSA; due to limited funds, only those students who submit their FAFSA forms by March 1 are considered. UW offers numerous general and competitive scholarships based on academic merit. General scholarships are awarded upon admission into UW, but competitive scholarships are awarded by colleges, departments and programs to new and returning students.
