About University of Virginia - SCPS

Founded in 1819, the University of Virginia is an iconic public institution of higher education, boasting nationally ranked schools and programs, diverse and distinguished faculty, a major academic medical center and proud history as a renowned research university. For decades, it has ranked consistently among the very best public universities in the country, and UVA is regularly cited for providing best value and return on investment.

UVA's School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) is dedicated to serving adult and nontraditional students through flexible online instruction tailored for working adults. SCPS offers two bachelor's completion programs and 14 graduate and undergraduate certificate programs, all available online.

Students can take classes on a part-time basis to earn their bachelor's in either Interdisciplinary Studies or Healthcare Management. In the former, students choose from among ten concentrations in areas such as business, cybersecurity, information technology, psychology, liberal arts, or early childhood development. Students enter with 45-60 credits and earn 60 credits by taking core and elective classes and completing a capstone.

SCPS also offers undergraduate certificates in:

As well as graduate certificates in:

An intensive 10-week in-person program awarding a Criminal Justice Certificate is also available. Certificates range from 5-10 courses and can be earned in 12-20 months, depending on the program.

Most recently, the University of Virginia enjoys top five ranking as Best Value Public University (#2) and Best Public National University (#4) from U.S. News and World Report. In addition, U.S. News and World Report also ranks the university as #28 in National Universities and #9 in Best Colleges for Veterans (both 2020). The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

For SCPS, the goal is not simply to enroll students but to support them through graduation. Students in UVA's Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Program graduate at a rate more than double the national average for part-time students at four-year universities. Our new student retention is also more than twice the national average.

  • Flexibility: The undergraduate degree programs at SCPS are designed for busy adult students. Most online classes are synchronous and meet in the evenings at specific times with live instructors, and some asynchronous options are also available. Students can choose the format that best fits their schedules.
  • Financial Aid and Affordability: Students who attend the University of Virginia get the assistance they need through scholarships, grants, federal and needs-based loans, and work-study programs; the University limits needs-based loans to ensure affordability.
  • Career Center: Students have access to substantial career development resources through UVA's Career Center. Through a recruiting platform called Handshake, students can receive career counseling, connect with potential employers, attend career workshops and other events, find internships, and access online resources.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applicants to University of Virginia must have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Students applying to degree completion programs at SCPS must have 45 credits and can transfer up to 60.
