About University of Richmond

The University of Richmond (Richmond) is a private school located about 90 miles south of Washington, D.C. The university's campus spans 350 acres in the suburbs outside of Virginia's state capital, Richmond. The university ranked 28th in the U.S. News and World Report list of top national liberal arts colleges in 2013; Bloomberg Businessweek ranked the institution 15th in the nation for its undergraduate business programs in 2012.

Richmond has a Greek system of 15 chapters, and one-third of students are members. The school also has a student newspaper, a radio station, and roughly 180 student organizations and clubs. The university was a 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recipient, and Richmond students have been awarded the Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Clarendon scholarships.

Academics

All undergraduate students are initially enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences. In addition, all freshmen are expected to complete a First-Year Seminar during either the Fall or Spring semester, and they can choose from more than 30 seminar topics. After their first year, students are free to pursue degrees from any of the other four colleges or choose a major within the School of Arts and Sciences, such as criminal justice, computer science, English or philosophy. Roughly 60% of the student body chooses to stay in the School of Arts and Sciences after their first year of studies.

In the Robins School of Business, students pursue degrees in accounting, business administration, and economics. Concentrations in finance, accounting, management, international business, marketing, or economics are available. The University of Richmond School of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association and offers a free bar preparation course. The School of Professional and Continuing Studies caters to part-time and non-traditional students and has degrees and certificates in liberal arts, education, information systems management, paralegal studies, human resource management, and emergency management.

Admissions

Prospective freshmen should submit the Common Application along with a University of Richmond supplemental form. Applicants need a high school diploma or its equivalent and must have at least 16 credit hours of secondary education; minimum course requirements include English, mathematics, history, science, and foreign language. Students also need to submit ACT or SAT scores and at least one letter of recommendation. As of 2012, nearly 80% of applicants ranked in the top 20% of their high school class.

Admission into the Robins School of Business requires a GPA of 2.7 at Richmond, as well as completed courses in calculus, accounting, and economics. The Jepson School of Leadership Studies admits students who have completed at least one course in leadership studies, and acceptance into the school is based on academic performance, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, and an essay.

Tuition and Financial Aid

As of 2012, the total cost of attending the University of Richmond was estimated at $56,070 per year, including room and board, books and supplies, and personal expenses. Financial aid is available through various grants and scholarships. Merit-based aid is available to all students, and the Richmond Scholars Program awards full tuition or full tuition plus room and board to 45 eligible students. Students are automatically considered for the Richmond Scholars Program when they apply to the university; they're also considered for five other scholarships that award partial tuition. In addition, Richmond offers need-based aid through work-study programs, loans, grants and scholarships.
