About the University of North Texas

The University of North Texas (UNT) is located in Denton and is one of the largest public universities in the country. It's part of the state university system, which also includes the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and the University of North Texas at Dallas.

UNT was founded in 1890 as the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute. This research university was named by The Princeton Review as one of the best colleges in the West for 2012.

Academics

UNT offers almost 100 bachelor's degree programs as well as over 100 graduate programs through 12 schools and colleges. The three most popular areas of study for undergraduates in 2011 were business, interdisciplinary studies and the social sciences. Distance learning degree and certificate programs are also available in such fields as education, information technology, merchandising and hospitality.

Admissions

UNT's undergraduate acceptance rate was 65% for the Fall 2011 semester. However, applicants who graduate in the top of their high school class or submit excellent SAT or ACT scores are guaranteed admission.

In addition to high school transcripts and standardized test scores, prospective undergraduates need to submit a general application and pay a $60 application fee. UNT also requires applicants to take the Texas Higher Education Assessment test to determine their writing, reading and math skills. The university also accepts other assessment exam scores, such as the ACCUPLACER or COMPASS tests. The application deadlines are March 1st for the Fall semester and December 1st for the Spring semester.

Tuition & Financial Aid

For the 2012-2013 academic year, tuition and fees for an undergraduate Texas resident taking 12 credit hours were $4,178.70, while nonresidents paid $8,390.70. Additional costs include books, supplies and transportation. Incoming freshmen also might consider room and board expenses since the university requires most new students to live on campus until they've completed at least 30 credit hours.

Financial aid resources include grants, work-study programs, loans and scholarships. High-achieving first-time freshman can apply to become Emerald Eagle Scholars. This award is available to students who demonstrate financial need and covers four years of tuition and fees. UNT also offers the Timely Graduation Tuition Program, which allows undergraduate students to take on a full course load but still pay the same university tuition and fees as they would for 12 credit hours worth of classes.
