Universal Barber College

Founded in 1995, Universal Barber College is a private, vocational, for-profit school located in Phoenix, AZ. Its barber stylist courses prepare students for careers as hair stylists, barber shop owners, and platform artists, while its instructor course prepares students to manage and teach barber and stylist courses.

Academics

Universal Barber College (UBC) offers two levels of barber stylist courses and a barber instructor course. The barber stylist programs combine classroom lecture with hands-on practice. The primary stylist course is for new students who do not have cosmetology or barber licenses. The total program requires 1,500 contact hours and generally takes a year to complete. Students who already have cosmetology licenses and are seeking barber licenses may enroll in the secondary course, which requires an additional 750 contact hours. Both programs prepare students to pass the state barber licensing exam, which is a requirement for anyone who wants to be a practicing barber in Arizona.

The 450-hour barber instructor program is designed for those who are already licensed barbers, have at least two years of experience as barbers, and want to become instructors. Four faculty members teach at UBC, and 57 students were enrolled at the college in 2011. As of 2010, the job placement rate for graduates was 100%.

Admissions

UBC has open admissions, and 100% of the student body attended full time in 2011. As of 2011, the student body was 98% male. The majority of students (89%) were in-state, and 61% were age 25 and over. The largest racial/ethnic groups at the time were as follows: 60% Black or African American, 23% Hispanic/Latino, 14% White, and 4% American Indian or Alaskan native.

Tuition and Financial Aid

In 2012, the total cost for the level one course was $15,880, including tuition, supplies, uniform, and fees. The total level two costs came to $5,380. During the 2011-2012 school year, students living off-campus could expect to pay about $35,532 for a one-year program, which includes tuition, fees, books, supplies, and an estimate for room and board.
