About Northern Arizona University
Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a 4-year, high-research institution founded in 1899 and located in Flagstaff, AZ. There are over two-dozen NAU satellite campuses located throughout Arizona. In the 2010-2011 edition of the American Indian Science and Engineering's college guide, Winds of Change, NAU was ranked among the top 200 colleges for Native Americans in the nation.
The university participates in 12 NCAA Division I women's and men's sports programs and offers students numerous intramural sports clubs. NAU also has a rich arts culture, with students participating in music, theater, and film performances through the School of Arts and Letters.
Academics
More than 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs are available to the approximately 25,000 students enrolled in NAU's seven colleges and 35 schools and departments. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in both classroom and online settings. Students may also choose from over 200 study abroad programs.
NAU's engineering, business and physical therapy programs have been recognized by several ranking organizations and publications, including U.S. News and World Report and The Princeton Review. The university also offers degrees in forestry, arts, education, human services, and behavioral sciences.
Admissions
Prospective NAU students may complete an online application on the university's website for the campus they wish to attend. Paper applications may also be downloaded from the site and mailed to the admissions office. Students must submit their official SAT or ACT test scores from the testing agency along with a $25 application fee. Deadlines for applications are July 13th for the fall semester, November 1st for the spring semester, and May 1st for the summer semester.
NAU received 31,995 applications in fall of 2011 and admitted 65% of applicants. About 35%, or roughly 3,951, of those applicants who were admitted actually enrolled. The university's undergraduate population is racially diverse; 66% White, 17% Hispanic, 4% Native American, 3% Black, and 2% Asian. Nearly a quarter of NAU students are age 25 and over.
Tuition & Financial Aid
The 2012 tuition rate established for NAU by the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) for an undergraduate Arizona resident is $8,453 per year. Housing, meal plans, and fees bring the estimated annual cost to $18,000. Non-resident undergraduates can expect to pay approximately $30,356 per year with the same expenses, but a higher base tuition rate of $20,808.
NAU offers LOUIE (Lumberjack Online University Information Environment), an online system for students to check the status of financial aid, awards, and disbursements. Students must attend and complete loan entrance counseling if they are borrowing student loans for the first time. The university also awards academic and financial needs scholarships, and has a student employment program to help offset tuition costs.
