About Middle Tennessee State University

Located in Murfreesboro, TN, Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) was founded in 1911 as a normal school for the training of teachers. It became a 4-year college in 1925 and was granted university status in 1965. MTSU has several nationally recognized programs, including those in concrete management, aerospace engineering, and the recording industry. The university houses one of the largest sheet music collections in the country in its Center for Popular Music and also sponsors the Tennessee Teachers Hall of Fame.

Academics

MTSU's 6 degree-granting colleges include the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, College of Mass Communication, College of Education, Jennings A. Jones College of Business, and the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. The College of Basic and Applied Sciences is the largest of the undergraduate colleges in declared majors; it also offers 6 master's programs and 1 doctoral program. Its 10 departments cover the basic sciences as well as applied programs, such as computer science, agriculture, and aerospace technology.

The College of Behavioral and Health Sciences is the newest of MTSU's colleges, conferring degrees in health, mental health, and human services. Within this college are programs in criminal justice administration, health and human performance, psychology, social work, nursing, and human sciences. Since MTSU's founding as a school for teachers, the commitment to preparing instructors has remained in the College of Education. The Jennings A. Jones College of Business received accreditation from AACSB International in 2004 and boasts one of the largest full-time faculty staffs in the country.

The College of Liberal Arts hosts a majority of the general education core as well as 10 departments with more than 3,600 undergraduate students. Several centers are part of this college, including the Center for Historic Preservation; the Albert Gore Research Center; the University Writing Center; the Mineral, Gem, and Fossil Museum; and the Forensic Institute for Research and Education. The College of Mass Communication is the only such school in the U.S. to offer a recording industry program and mass communication programs in the same institution. This provides students interested in the music industry access to training in other fields, such as public relations.

Admissions

MTSU recognizes credit from AP and CLEP exams as well as military service; interested applicants can check the website for a listing of other accepted tests. The deadline for scholarship consideration is December 1, and first priority deadline for fall admittance is February 15; second priority deadline is July 1. The spring semester deadline is December 15.

Graduate students have different admission requirements, including GPA requirements. Each graduate applicant should submit his or her college transcripts, graduate admissions test scores, and 3 letters of recommendation along with his or her online application and $35 application fee.
