About Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is a 4-year public college primarily serving the Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island area. The academy is dedicated to preparing students to become licensed maritime professionals or for other careers in marine and facilities engineering. The school, located on Cape Cod approximately 60 miles southeast of Boston, is structured as a military academy. Most undergraduate students are enrolled in the Regiment of Cadets; however, participation in programs leading to commissioning is voluntary.

Academics

Massachusetts Maritime Academy offers bachelor's degree programs in environmental science, marine safety, maritime transportation, international business, facilities engineering, marine engineering, emergency management, marine biology and energy management. The programs in marine transportation and marine engineering are approved by the United States Department of Transportation to prepare graduates for federal licensing examinations as 3rd mate or 3rd assistant engineer. The academy also offers master's degree programs in emergency management and facilities management.

The school year consists of 2 73-day semesters, which bracket a 52-day winter term. During the winter 'sea term,' students go on a training cruise or participate in other approved cooperative education activities. All programs require at least one term at sea.

The student body is 96% full-time, 91% male, 92% Caucasian, 96% age 24 or younger. About 3/4s are in-state residents.

Admissions

Prospective students may apply online or use a printed application. There is a $50 application fee. Those desiring admission must have completed at least 16 high-school courses in math, English, languages, social science, natural and physical science and 2 electives. Applicants must submit SAT or ACT scores, high-school transcripts and transcripts from any other colleges attended, 2 letters of recommendation, an essay and information about extracurricular activities. The academy recommends that applicants visit the college for a personal interview. Candidates who wish to serve in the armed forces or United States Merchant Marine must meet certain physical requirements.
