About Manhattan Area Technical College

Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) is a 2-year, public college located in Manhattan, Kansas. The school was founded as Manhattan Area Vocational-Technical School in 1965. It continues to offer technical associate's degree and certificate programs geared towards preparing students for particular vocations.

Academics

MATC offers 15 associate's degree and technical certificate programs in health, business, construction, computer, engineering, mechanic and precisions production fields. MATC's nursing programs are among the most popular at the school.

With a student-to-faculty ratio of 11-to-one, class sizes are small. Most instructors have years of industry experience in the field they are teaching. MATC offers job placement assistance, and the school's graduates have a 90% job placement rate. The Manhattan Area Technical College Library provides students with access to print titles, print subscriptions, DVDs, videos and databases.

Admissions

Admissions requirements vary depending on program. Applicants applying to a technical certificate or associate's degree program may fill out an application online. Applicants interested in continuing education courses or non-degree programs should contact the student services office. All applicants should review their program's requirements before applying.

With the exception of the nursing program, MATC does not require applicants to have a high school diploma in order to enroll in certificate programs. Applicants are required to have a high school diploma or GED in order to enroll in any of the school's associate's degree programs. An entrance exam is not required for most programs.

Once admitted, most students will need to take the COMPASS test as a placement test for math and English classes. Applicants do not need to submit standardized test scores, but they may submit ACT or SAT scores as a placement test. MATC accepts dual and AP credits.

Over 700 students attended MATC in 2011. Over half (53%) were 24 years of age or younger. Most (59%) were full-time students.

Tuition & Financial Aid

In 2011-2012, students paid an estimated $4,215 per academic year for tuition and fees. Books and supplies cost an additional estimated $1,900 per year.

MATC offers a tuition payment plan. Additionally, several scholarships are available for MATC students, including an MATC Merit Scholarship, which awards $500 each semester to an incoming student based on academic records and evidence of leadership.
