About Kennebec Valley Community College

Kennebec Valley Community College is a commuter school that's part of the Maine Community College System. Its remote location is accessible via Interstate-95. The school does offer distance learning, as well as on-campus certificate and degree programs, workforce training, and professional development opportunities. The school holds a broad variety of geographic, field of study, and professional accreditation.

Academics

More than 30 certificate and associate's degree programs are offered through the school's seven academic departments: allied health, humanities, nursing, business, math and science, social sciences, and trades and technology. In 2011, the allied health and related programs were overwhelmingly the most popular. Faculty included 41 full-time members and 120 part-time members in 2011. The school's Marden Center for Student Success offers academic coaching, tutoring, and access to a suite of specialized technology, such as voice recognition programs. The school also offers employment assistance for graduating students.

Admissions

Kennebec Valley Community College generally admits all students with a high school transcript and proof of immunization. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis. Incoming students are required to take the Accuplacer placement exam. Some programs, such as nursing, have additional admission requirements that may include more testing.

In-state residents made up 99% of undergraduate student enrollment in Fall 2011. Students 24 years of age and younger made up 53% of Fall 2011 enrollment. In addition, roughly two-thirds of students were enrolled part-time, and an almost equal percentage of the student body was female.

Tuition & Financial Aid

In 2012-2013 the tuition per credit hour was $86.00 for in-state students, $129.00 for NERSP (Apple Program) students, and $172.00 for out-of-state students. Other fees included an application fee, activity fee, parking fee, student health insurance, additional risk insurance, and student liability insurance. In 2011-2012, the estimated expenses for books and supplies were $1,098. That same year, the total estimated expenses for in-state students living off-campus and not with family members were $16,810; for out-of-state students with similar living arrangements, the total estimated expenses were $19,390.

The school encourages its students to complete their financial aid applications, including the FAFSA, before May 1 for the next Fall semester. In addition to federal aid, state aid, such as a Maine State Grant, may be available. During the 2010-2011 school year, Kennebec Valley Community College awarded 182 full-time beginning undergraduate students some form of financial aid - either state, federal, local or institutional.
