About John C. Calhoun State Community College

John C. Calhoun State Community College (also called Calhoun Community College) was created after Tennessee Valley State Technical School and John C. Calhoun State Technical Junior College consolidated in 1947. The main Decatur campus sits on 110 acres in Tanner, Alabama. There are also school locations in Huntsville and the Limestone Correctional Facility. Calhoun Community College is the largest 2-year institution in the Alabama Community College System.

Academics

Students who attend Calhoun Community College have the opportunity to earn associate's degrees and certificates. In 2011, the most popular associate's degree programs were in liberal arts and sciences, the health professions and engineering technology. The three most popular programs for students earning certificates were in the health professions, engineering technology and precision production.

During the 2012-2013 school year, more than 600 nursing students enrolled at Calhoun Community College, which was the largest class of nursing students that the college has ever had. Remote, weekend and evening courses are available at the school. The college also offers employment services, remedial services and academic-career counseling.

Admissions

Calhoun Community College has an open admissions policy. Students who wish to start a program must complete an application, submit identification to the admissions office, apply for financial aid if necessary, complete the college placement test if needed and meet with an advisor before registering for classes. In fall 2011, 41% of students at the college attended full time, and 61% of all students were 24 years old or younger.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition and fees for 2012-2013 at Calhoun Community College were $131 per credit hour for in-state students and $238 per credit hour for out-of-state students. In 2011-2012, the estimated expenses for books and supplies totaled $1,500. Room and board for students living on their own was expected to cost $4,500 for 2011-2012.

Students can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to possibly receive Pell grants, other federal grants, state assistance, loans and federal work study. During the 2010-2011 school year, the college awarded 1,074 full-time, beginning undergraduate students with some form of financial aid.
