About Florida Technical College
Founded in 1982 for specialized business training, Florida Technical College (FTC) now has five campuses in Orlando, Lakeland, Kissimmee, Deland and Pembroke Pines. FTC emphasizes subject focus, encouraging students to take only one course per month. As a school with many students who work full-time, FTC offers both day and evening classes. The college focuses on vocational training, so its career assistance office is a major part of each student's time at FTC. The college also values the use of technology in education. After meeting certain requirements, each student receives an iPad to store his or her e-textbooks.
Academics
While most of the programs offered at FTC grant diplomas or associate's degrees, five bachelor's degree offerings were recently introduced. The programs include business entrepreneurship (management and marketing), business project management, criminal justice - homeland security, health services administration and information technology networking, web design and programming.
Diploma offerings include computer-aided drafting (CAD), medical assisting and cosmetology, to name a few. The CAD program trains students for entry-level computer drafting employment, while the medical assistance program teaches students both administrative and clinical skills. Students interested in the 11-month medical billing program have the opportunity to complete an externship.
Associate of Science options offered by FTC include business and management technology, business management and marketing, computer drafting and design, criminal justice, entrepreneurship and health information technology, among others. Students interested in criminal justice can learn about theories and practices of forensics, as well as the workings of the justice system, in about 18 months. The entrepreneurship program teaches students to develop and market a business plan.
Admissions
FTC has an open admissions policy. As of Fall 2011, all students at FTC were full-time attendees, and 71% were women. Over half of all students were Latino, while about a quarter were white and one-fifth were African-American. About 63% of FTC students were over the age of 25.
Tuition & Financial Aid
FTC is a private, for-profit institution, and there are no differences in tuition rates for Florida residents and non-residents. For the 2010-2011 school year, almost all students received some form of federal grant or loan; 95% of first-year students received federal student loans, and the average amount was $6,423. The average federal grant amount was $2,871, and nearly nine out of ten students received one. Students who lived on their own off campus spent approximately $10,700 on room and board during 2010-2011.
