Chattahoochee Technical College

Chattahoochee Technical College (CTC) is a 2-year, public vocational college serving north-central Georgia. The main Marietta campus and the Mountain View campus are both in Marietta, a suburb of metro Atlanta. CTC also has campuses in Jasper, Austell, Canton, Dallas, Acworth, and Woodstock, Georgia.

Academics

CTC offers associate's degrees, diplomas, and certificates, though not all programs are available at all locations. Programs are offered in five main areas: business sciences, computer sciences and engineering technology, health sciences, personal and public services, and technical studies.

Programs vary in length and requirements. The healthcare assistant certificate, for instance, requires 30-35 hours of coursework, some of which may involve labs depending on specialization. The 54-hour cosmetology diploma program combines classroom work with labs and practicums; the Associate in Applied Science program in early childhood care and education requires 72 hours of occupational and general education academic courses.

As of 2011, 218 full-time and 394 part-time faculty taught CTC's population of over 11,500 students. In addition to campus-based courses, instruction is available via distance learning. As of 2011, roughly 42% of students enrolled in at least one online class.

Admissions

Applicants must be 16 or older and have a high school diploma or GED in order to enroll. A placement test is also required unless students submit ACT, SAT, COMPASS, or ASSET scores. While placement test scores don't bar students from admission, those who don't score the minimum for their desired program may be required to enroll in remedial coursework.

Students can apply online or in-person. Ideally, all required documentation should be submitted 2 months before the start of the semester; the actual calendar deadline for admission is usually 3-5 weeks before the start of a term. In 2012, the regular registration deadline for submission of application forms and all required documents was the 8th of August for classes starting on the 17th.

The CTC student body was 68% part-time and 32% full-time as of 2011, and 60% of students were female. The racial/ethnic breakdown as of 2011 was 57% white, 33% black/African American, 5% Hispanic/Latino, and 2% Asian. About half of the student population was 24 or younger during this time, and 100% of students came from within the state of Georgia.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for Georgia residents was $85 per credit hour as of Spring 2013. Out-of-state students paid $170 per hour while international students paid $340. Some programs may have higher tuition costs; the truck driving program, for instance, was $125 per hour as of 2013. In addition, some programs have specific fees, such as fees for fuel in the commercial driver license program or assessment fees for medical assistant and surgical technician students. During the 2011-2012 school year, the total estimated annual cost of attendance - including books, fees, housing, tuition, and food - was $12,535 for Georgia residents and $14,335 for out-of-state students.

CTC students may apply for federal and state financial aid, such as grants and scholarships, though CTC does not participate in the federal student loan program. Students may also apply for scholarships and private loans; the school's website has a listing of available aid, including scholarships for new and returning students.
