About Central Connecticut State University

In 1849, the New Britain Normal School was established as the first publicly supported institution of higher learning in Connecticut. In 1983, the university's name was changed to Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). Today, the university's 165-acre campus serves as the scholastic home to over 12,000 students.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Central Connecticut State University 37th among the nation's top regional public universities in the North in its 'Regional Guide' for 2013. The Princeton Review recognized CCSU as one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. in 2012.

Academics

Central Connecticut State University offered over 100 undergraduate programs and over 400 graduate degree options as of 2012. At the undergraduate level, the school offers bachelor's degree programs in areas ranging from anthropology and criminology to nursing and computer science. Special learning opportunities include ROTC (Army), teacher certification, and distance learning options.

The school offers students a range of study-abroad options, including the university's Course Abroad program, which can take students to places like Montreal and South Africa. Students may also participate in nearly 200 short-term or long-term study abroad options, covering virtually every region in the world through a consortium of CCSU partner institutions.

Admissions

Individuals who apply to Central Connecticut State University are evaluated on a number of factors, including prior academic achievement, overall GPA, and SAT/ACT scores. The university requires that prospective students complete a college-preparatory high school curriculum before applying. The application process, including payment of a $50 application fee, must be completed no later than May 1 for fall admission. Applications are accepted online by CCSU.

As of Fall 2011, 80% of all undergraduate students who began their studies were 24 years of age or younger, 52% were male, and 78% of all undergraduates attended the university full-time. That same year, the three largest ethnic/racial groups at CCSU were Caucasian (72%), African-American (10%), and Hispanic/Latino (9%).
