About Boise State University

Boise State University is a public, 4-year university located in the mid-size city of Boise, Idaho. Founded in 1932, the campus encompasses 175 acres along the Boise River, near the city's downtown area. Boise State's Broncos compete in Division I NCAA athletics in a variety of sports, including football and basketball.

U.S. News and World Report named Boise State as one of the Top Regional Universities (West) in 2012. The university is the largest in the state of Idaho, and it puts community involvement and research at the forefront of its activities.

Academics

Boise State University is comprised of seven colleges offering nearly 200 degree programs at the associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctorate levels. The most popular degree programs include registered nursing, psychology and business.

In addition to on-campus learning, Boise State also offers online learning opportunities through its eCampus program. Entire degree programs, including graduate programs in educational technology, nursing and instructional performance technology, can be completed online through eCampus. Students can also take individual courses in a variety of departments through eCampus.

For students who are interested in studying abroad, Boise State offers opportunities through the Boise State Sponsored Programs to nearly 50 countries around the world. The university is also a member of the University Studies Abroad Consortium, which provides additional opportunities for foreign educational experiences.

Admissions

To apply to Boise State University, students should submit all necessary materials by May 15th for the fall semester and November 15th for the spring semester. Students should submit the application form (either paper or online), the $50 application fee, official transcripts and ACT or SAT scores. The university also accepts Advanced Placement (AP) scores for college credit.

Of those who apply for admission, 85% are admitted, and 52% of those admitted go on to enroll at the university. Seventy-three percent of students attend full-time, and 69% are Idaho residents. Women make up 53% of the student population; 79% of the students are white.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for a full-time student at Boise State varies for Idaho residents and non-residents. For residents attending full-time, tuition was $5,566 per year in 2011; for non-residents, it was $15,966. In addition to tuition, all undergraduate students should expect to pay a yearly $1,622 student health insurance fee. However, this fee can be waived if students provide proof that they have adequate insurance elsewhere.

The cost of living while attending Boise State is approximately $19,200 per year for residents and $29,600 for non-residents. Students can expect to pay around $1,100 per year for books and supplies.

Boise State University offers several merit scholarships. Most of them are departmental. However, the Capital Scholarship is open to all students, regardless of major, and is awarded to those who were in the top 10% of their class and scored in the top 10% on their ACT or SAT. This scholarship awards the student $1,000 per year for up to five years.

Graduate tuition does not vary by program, but rates are different for residents and non-residents. For those graduate students who need a bit of help paying for school, graduate assistantships are available.
