About Atlanta Technical College
Atlanta Technical College, also known as Atlanta Tech, is a 2-year public school in the center of Atlanta, Georgia. The school was founded in 1945 as Smith-Hughes Vocational School and was renamed to Atlanta Technical College (ATC) in 2000. Classes are also available at its Tuxedo Center extension campus in northwest Atlanta. ATC opened a new allied health and technology center in 2011.
Academics
ATC offers Associate of Applied Science degrees, diplomas and technical certificates in a range of vocational training areas, many of which have multiple available specialties. For instance, students in the popular automotive technology program can pursue a 55-hour automotive technology diploma or 1 of 4 certificate options. Automotive certificate programs vary in length from 9 to 18 credit hours and are available with specialties in automotive chassis, climate control, electrical systems and transmission technology.
Online programs are available in accounting, business administration technology, management supervisory development, marketing and paralegal studies. ATC also offers some courses on nights and weekends. Students in high school can participate in one of the dual enrollment programs if they qualify.
Classes at ATC were taught by 95 full-time and 281 part-time faculty members as of 2011.
Admissions
ATC has an open admissions policy, but some programs have more stringent entry requirements than others. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or GED. The application can be completed online and requires students to pay a $20 application fee.
All potential students must also complete an assessment exam before enrolling in classes. Exam scores do not bar applicants from admission; students who do not obtain the minimum scores required for their desired programs may be admitted provisionally and will need to complete learning support courses. Alternately, students may submit ACT or SAT scores. In order to be admitted with regular status for an associate's degree program, an applicant needs an SAT verbal score of 450 and math score of 430 or an ACT composite score of 20. Diploma and technical certificate programs require scores of 410 for both the verbal and math sections of the SAT or a composite score of 18 on the ACT.
While applications may be submitted at any time during the school year, applicants should generally apply at least 30 days before the start of the semester they want to attend. In 2013, for instance, the application deadline was April 18 for classes beginning on May 21. As of 2011, 100% of ATC students were Georgia residents and 67% attended part-time.
Tuition and Financial Aid
As of 2013, Georgia residents paid $85 per credit hour for tuition; an additional technology fee of $55 and a student fee of $131 is also assessed to all students, regardless of how many credit hours they take. A student taking 12 semester hours paid $1,206 in tuition and fees for the 2013 spring semester. Out-of-state students pay twice the resident tuition rate, and international students pay 4 times the resident tuition rate. Some courses, such as those in the truck driving program, charge higher tuition rates.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, the total cost of full-time attendance was estimated to be $14,352 for Georgia residents and $16,152 for out-of-state students, including room and board, tuition, fees, books and supplies.
Federal and state grants, work-study programs and scholarships are available to eligible students. Students enrolled in ATC's degree and diploma programs are usually eligible for Pell grants, but aid is not available for some technical certificate programs. ATC does not participate in the federal student loan program. Payment plans are not available at ATC.
